Mud Paint is a clay based furniture paint. According to the website a little goes a long way, it gives a smooth sleek finish, and adheres to any surface. I agree with most of this.
What I wish I knew about Mud Paint
- It’s thick, a little goes a long way. This is a true statement. However, I did try to thin it to eliminate brush marks and BIG MISTAKE it came out so streaky and gross looking. Unlike chalk paint where you can add water to thin… don’t. It was the Worst! See picture…
- Being thick I had issues with brush lines. Their website goes into this deeply on how to avoid that, but I couldn’t get it to not have brush lines. I choose to use synthetic over natural bristles because I’ve always felt natural bristles give you MORE brush lines, but with this product I get them with which ever brush I use. I have tried more and less paint but still get them. I may just need even more practice with this paint type. See Picture…
- One way to avoid some of the brush marks is DON’T go BACK OVER IT. Long even brush strokes moving quickly and only once worked the best.
- To eliminate most brush marks in small areas I used a small synthetic paint brush, pressing medium hard with very short strokes. The piece I was working on had small sections on the sides. Which is another point..
- Mud Paint being thick piles up in the corners and the details quickly! I’m not sure I would use this on a piece with a lot of scroll work in the wood.
- A little DOES go a long way. This has Excellent coverage! However, it does smell a little funny. I did need two coats because it gives more brush lines if you go back over the quickly drying paint I didn’t get the coverage as even as I would have liked in the first pass.
- It does adhere to any surface. In FACT I used this as a test color on my kitchen cabinets makeover and it was the ONLY paint to not scratch off after it dried. It appears to have a low curing time. (this is compared to Fusion Mineral, after 21 days curing time the Fusion Mineral did not scratch off). My kitchen cabinets are laminate, so this will be my Go To paint for laminate in the future.
- I LOVE the colors. They are matte in finish.
- A wax finish over this paint gives it a semi-gloss antique look. I loved how my piece turned out even with the few brush marks because the wax really brought out the color and finished the piece. See the Final Product!
I would use Mud Paint again, especially on a simple high traffic item like a table. So far I feel the durability is wonderful.
Here’s the little plant stand I refinished and hand stenciled. So cute! This one will be up for sale!
